The Shettles Method: A Historical Approach to Influencing Baby's Gender
The quest to influence a baby's gender has intrigued prospective parents for generations. One of the most well-known methods emerged in the 1960s, developed by Dr. Landrum Shettles. This approach, known as the "Shettles Method," is grounded in the differing characteristics of male (Y) and female (X) sperm.
Understanding the Shettles Method
Dr. Shettles proposed that male Y-sperm are faster swimmers but less resilient, while female X-sperm are slower but more durable. This foundational idea led to a set of guidelines for timing intercourse to increase the likelihood of conceiving a child of the desired sex.
To Conceiving a Girl
To favour the conception of a girl, the Shettles Method recommended having intercourse two to four days before ovulation. Afterward, abstaining from intercourse was advised. This strategy is based on the belief that the more resilient X-sperm can survive the wait for the egg, whereas the less sturdy Y-sperm may not.
To Conceiving a Boy
Conversely, for those desiring a boy, the Shettles Method suggested having intercourse as close to ovulation as possible. The rationale is that the faster Y-sperm will reach the egg first, increasing the chances of conceiving a male child.
According to the hypothesis, male (Y) sperm are faster but more fragile than female (X) sperm. Further, acidic environments harm Y sperm, according to the theory, making conception of a girl more likely. This method aims to exploit these two factors. He concluded that the larger-headed sperms were that of the XX and the smaller-headed sperms were that of the XY. They began to perform and publish studies based on this idea, write books, and still to this date their findings have been left as gospel. The issue is, Dr Shettles was wrong with his findings (confirmed by scientists today). What he was really looking at was ‘capacitated’ and ‘uncapacitated’ sperm. The capacitation process had not yet been discovered when this theory was developed in his timing methodology. Capacitated sperm are sperm that have lost their protective caps, which means they’re ready to fertilize an egg. They moved faster and so this was wrongfully thought to be XY sperm. Uncapacitated sperm were bigger and slower because they were still wearing their protective caps,
(unable to fertilize the egg) and so they were wrongfully thought to be
XX sperm. Eventually, when uncapacitated sperm lose their protective cap, they will
all be the same size and move at the same speed, but they will both be
the X and Y sperm, whether they have a cap or whether they don’t. Sperm capacitates in waves, and they seem to be able to communicate with each other on some primitive level to coordinate this process, so if there are living sperm present, some will be capacitated and ready to fertilize the egg. Over the course of time, the capacitated sperm die -
capacitated sperm don’t live too long after they lose their caps, So, when
Dr Shettles makes the claim that “Y sperm don’t live as long”, what he
was really observing was the early deaths of capacitated sperm.
Capacitated sperm dies sooner than incapacitated sperm, but X and Y
sperm live the same length of time.
Contradictory Findings: Does Timing Favour Girls or Boys?
Following Shettles, several studies began to indicate results that contradicted his theory. In 1972, Guerrero studied over 1,300 conception cycles and observed that male births were more common when conception occurred six or more days before ovulation, but this dropped to around 44% on the day of ovulation. American scientist Elizabeth Whelan later built on Guerrero’s work, suggesting in her 1977 book, “Boy or Girl,” that intercourse four to six days before ovulation could favour boys, while intercourse closer to ovulation might increase the chances of conceiving a girl.
Lunar Cycles: Does The Moon Really Sway Gender
Dr. Jonas Gender Prediction and Planning using Moon Phases
So, how can I sway for a girl or boy? Is it possible to predict the gender of a baby from the stars? How can it be predetermined by choosing the hour of conception according to the Moon’s astrological sign? Can women rely on astrological calculations when choosing the sex of a baby? Sex selection has been known since ancient times. Many families decide to conceive a child of a specific gender as a result of unsuccessful attempts to have a son or daughter. By predicting a baby’s sex, they get a chance to experience the mystery and have fun while passing the time. One of such popular theories is Dr. Jonas Cosmo-Fertility concept, whose effectiveness rate of determining the sex of a baby is approximately 97.7%. This is based on the position of the moon and planets in the lunar cycle. There's more to come on this and how we discovered, how to effectively sway the odds successfully, with the help of the Moon. Our sway method is the most accurate gender sway method available to date.
